Are you ready for 1 Universal Year?

What a ride 2016 has been. This year has been one overwhelmingly challenging year. It was as if we were called to grow more quickly, to discard with more vengeance outmoded attitude and beliefs, to shift into unknown and uncharted territories.

This year called on courage, strength and compassion never before seen.

This year called for letting go and letting in.

Change is the darndest thing. Did you find that status quo was no longer an option this year?

The year-end holiday season is a time to reflect on the last 12 months and to set intentions for the next.

According to the science of numerology, 2016 is a 9 Universal Year, a year of extremes and endings.

Next year, a 1 Universal Year, is liken to a new dawn, a new spring to set the foundation for the next nine years.

Plant the seeds of the life you want to manifest, cultivate your heartfelt desires with faith, dedication, joy and vitality, and watch your plants grow.

For decades, I struggled to find equanimity. The elusive point of balance where one can be content and happy at where one is. This state of mind which Buddhists call nirvana disregards the chaos and imperfections that exist outside the physical body.

I read a ton, pored through books from major religions, practiced traditional Eastern arts and dug deep into alternative practices that most will consider woo-hoo. The more I resisted, the further nirvana eluded me. The greater the distance to the light I was chasing.

The answers came fast and furiously the day I rediscovered yoga. When I got onto the [yoga] mat, the mat became my mirror, reflecting every single neurosis.

How I moved on the mat was a reflection of how I lived my life.

Yoga, defined as a union of the body, mind and spirit, allowed me to see I was living the three as if they were disparate entities.

When the shift happened, not only could I see myself clearly, I saw every single sentient being in me. How different and similar we all are. How we all desire the same things yet in the middle of the noise we lose ourselves in, we lose connecting to the thumping heart that is naturally peace-loving, a heart that is capable of being our own teacher and healer.

On the mat, I see that we lose our center when we are caught in the rigidity of daily routine that revolves around work and sometimes stressful home life. Inexplicable rage, mindless violence, health issues, these are all manifestations of our disconnectedness.

When diseases strike, we no longer have the wisdom to heal ourselves. We have simply forgotten how to do it.

To cite one example, a city dweller’s perennial upper back tightness is highly likely due to the inordinate amount of the time spent at the desk. Fatigue inevitably sets in and over time, the ache becomes an inflammation that has to be addressed with an onslaught of prescription medication and sometimes expensive treatments that tackle these painful symptoms.

These are woefully inadequate quick fixes.

Yet self-awareness goes to the root of this ache and is a more sustainable solution. Your physical discomfort is completely necessary because it carries a very important message.

The body is pleading for consciousness. It wants you to get up, shift and flow. It wants you to remember the miracle of inhalation and exhalation. It thrives on a diet of real food that is a natural medicine.

In my other life as a travel and wellness writer for international travel publications, I have been touched by so many teachers I meet on my path to super consciousness. They, and the teachers I subconsciously attract, continue to shape me.

I come from a place of gratitude and see that I am at a very good place to connect you to experiences that will set you up on this journey of living with your eyes, heart and mind wide open.


In this workshop, I want us to stop at where we are, set aside our cerebral side and feel the goings-on in the body. There are no names of diseases and chemicals to memorize. There is another time and place for those who embrace these things.

Specifically designed for busy city dwellers, this workshop equips you with awareness and self-care tools you can expand into all areas of your life for balanced living.

I want us to acquire one skill: The art of tuning into the body.

Carena is a practitioner of Tao-In, a fusion of Chinese-, Indian- and Tibetan-style yoga. She is formally schooled in various forms of complementary medicine including Tung’s Acupuncture, aromatherapy, aromatherapy massage, Macrobiotic Shiatsu and TCM Food Cures. As a descendant of a long line of acupuncturists and herbalists, she is intimately familiar with the wisdom of harnessing nature for optimal health.

Fabrice is a businessman, aka corporate warrior, who has been practicing yoga and meditation for 15 years. He is well aware of the rigors of boardroom combat and the wisdom of equilibrium. His teaching style is as steady and firm as his daytime suit-and-tie persona. He takes the practitioner through basic yet strong poses and has a knack for translating the most complex poses into every man’s language.

The mind wanders, return to the breath anyway.

The fear of falling is crippling, let go anyway.

The heart heaves with the weight of the dark clouds hanging overhead, surrender anyway.

The soul feels beaten, practice anyway.

The same asana, the same breath.

A different intention, a different outcome.

This is why you return to the mat.

To learn, relearn and unlearn.

To allow yourself to be transformed.

Happy Father’s Day

One thing struck us when we visited Mr. Sopheak at home, some 20-minute tuk tuk ride from Phnom Penh city center (for those of you new to us, Mr. Sopheak is the creative, gentle soul who carves and crafts our brass bangles from disused bomb casings). He was doing the two most important things in his life and he wanted to do them well. His employment with the Cambodian co-op we choose to work with allows him the flexibility of caring for his young child.

Five days a week, he scoots off after lunch to pick up his child from school, then back to the workshop in the city. The little one amuses himself at home. Neighbors watch out for one another in a ‘hood that does not require doors to be shut.

Whenever necessary, daddy is able to work from home. His tools are organized in a small bag and his home is spartan save for a low table that is his work table. While he chips and hammers away, little son is playing nearby, comforted by the knowledge daddy is around.

The roof above the head, in a safe environment, is possible from a living wage that pays the bills in a fast modernizing city that is picking up good pace from decades of debilitating war.

Our conscious business choice path the way for equality, so a future generation of young Cambodians have access to the opportunities you and I enjoy. Your purchase of our products enable us to continue this work.

Speaking of work, we had a blast connecting with so many people at our last event at Kitchen by Food Rebel.

We were surrounded by likeminded souls peddling everything that is green, wholesome and sustainable. We met so many people who cared about the same things. It was a very inspiring place to be. (In case you didn’t know, Kitchen by Food Rebel has Bulletproof coffee on the menu. Did you know this delicious coffee containing grass-fed butter and MCT oil is a brain food?)

Truthfully, we always have butterflies in the tummy whenever we put ourselves out there.

Can we answer all your questions? How do our products make a difference? Is it enough we care so much for the health of this planet and the people who bring us our produce and wares?

We wonder what we are doing here. All. The. Time. We are humbled by how little we know. By the seemingly insurmountable tasks that require us to learn, relearn and unlearn so many things. By the curveballs on the road.

Sticking to the known and tested is more comfortable and secure. But we set our intentions, take a deep breath and plunge in anyway.

Is it courage, faith or naivety? Probably all of the three.

We know we are at a very good place. And we are always at exactly where we need to be.

New moon, new beginnings

So many things have unfolded since our last e-newsletter. We did not expect the velocity – and ferocity – of the river we were traveling on. The good news is we went with the flow.

You bet it’s been a hell of a ride.

We let go of our physical store and are transiting online. We expect to open for business again next month or so. Or. So. Because despite the best planning, life happens and we get sidetracked. Doors close and open. We shift accordingly.

Life kind of fell apart and in place simultaneously. Everything clicked, as they were meant to be.

The incredible spinal twist Marichyasana C does not happen from sheer brute force. It requires one to soften considerably so shift can happen.

We actually have not been able to access the computer for over a week now. Just call it incredible tech trouble. This blog has to be done on another machine from a bygone dinosaur age.

All universe asks of us is to surrender and not resist change. We did not fancy feeling stuck and we wished the answer – and change – would come swiftly. Yet in our yoga practice, we know life’s myriad challenges require us to dig into the well of placidity within. To step back instead of bulldozing ahead. To tune into the teacher within. To trust that voice, however radical it may appear to be, despite being intimidated by the deafening noise outside. To have faith that there is a power bigger than us that is in control and has just the perfect plan for those whose hearts and minds are ready to receive.
